Fotheringhay Castle

Features
Description
Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire, once a formidable Norman motte-and-bailey fortress, was founded around 1100 by Simon de Senlis, Earl of Northampton. Though today only earthworks and the conical motte remain, the site is steeped in royal history and dramatic events.
It was the birthplace of Richard III and, most famously, the location of the execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587. Mary spent her final days imprisoned at Fotheringhay before being tried and condemned for treason against Elizabeth I. Her poignant last letter, written hours before her death, is one of the most moving documents of the Tudor age.
Visitors to the site can walk the atmospheric grounds overlooking the River Nene, where interpretive panels recount the castle’s past and its role in shaping English and Scottish history. The nearby village church of St Mary and All Saints also has strong royal connections, adding depth to a visit.
Fotheringhay Castle remains a place of reflection on monarchy, power, and tragedy, attracting history enthusiasts and those intrigued by the enduring story of Mary Queen of Scots.
