Framlingham Castle

Features
Description
Framlingham Castle in Suffolk is a fine example of late 12th-century castle design, famous for its unique curtain wall punctuated by 13 towers. Built by the Bigod earls of Norfolk, Framlingham was more a statement of power than a military fortress, as it has no central keep.
Its Tudor history is especially significant: in 1553, Mary Tudor gathered her supporters here before claiming the throne as Queen Mary I. Today, visitors can walk the towering wall walk, enjoying sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.
Exhibits explore the Bigod dynasty, Tudor politics, and the social history of the poorhouse that occupied the site in later centuries. Framlingham Castle also offers a shop, café, family-friendly trails, and events such as Tudor re-enactments.
