Restormel Castle

Restormel Castle in Cornwall is an exceptional example of a perfectly circular motte-and-bailey fortress dating from the 13th century. Constructed by the Norman Earls of Cornwall and later held by the powerful Black Prince, the castle represents both military strength and aristocratic prestige.

Although ruined, its circular curtain wall, towers, and great hall remain striking, enclosing a grassy interior used today for events and relaxation. The elevated position above the River Fowey offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

Visitors can climb staircases to walk the castle walls and appreciate the unique geometry of the fortress. Interpretation boards explain the site’s medieval history, its role in the English Civil War, and its place within Cornwall’s feudal society.

Restormel castle is managed by English Heritage and offers picnic facilities, seasonal events, and access to nearby walking trails.
