Description
The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror in 1066, is one of the most iconic and formidable fortresses in British history. Built to assert Norman control over London, it evolved into a powerful symbol of royal authority, serving as a royal palace, prison, armoury, and execution site.
Militarily, it played a key role in the Peasants’ Revolt (1381), the Wars of the Roses, and during the Tudor reign, holding high-profile prisoners like Anne Boleyn.
Its defences include concentric curtain walls, bastions, and the iconic White Tower. The Tower also protected the Crown Jewels and stored arms, reinforcing its role in national security for over 900 years.
