Description

Dunstanburgh Castle sits on a remote Northumberland headland, offering one of the most atmospheric ruin visits in England. Constructed in the early 14th century by Thomas, Earl of Lancaster, the castle was built as a bold political statement and later saw action during the Wars of the Roses.

The ruins, including the Great Gatehouse and curtain walls, dominate the skyline above Embleton Bay and make for exceptional photography and walking routes. The site is accessed via an attractive coastal footpath that passes dunes and seabird colonies, making the approach as memorable as the castle itself.

There are no visitor facilities at the ruin (no café or shop), emphasising the wild coastal experience; visitors should plan accordingly. English Heritage provides interpretation panels, and seasonal guided walks help place the castle in its medieval and political context.
