Description
Dover Castle, located on the iconic White Cliffs of Kent, has been a cornerstone of England’s defense for over 900 years. Known as the “Key to England,” it was built by Henry II in the 12th century and played a critical role in national security through multiple historical eras. The castle served as a stronghold during the First Barons’ War and resisted the siege by Prince Louis of France in 1216. It was also pivotal during the Napoleonic Wars and functioned as a command center in both World Wars.
Key exhibits include the Great Tower, with its medieval royal chambers; the Roman Pharos, one of the oldest lighthouses in Europe; and the Secret Wartime Tunnels, which were instrumental in Operation Dynamo during WWII. Visitors can explore medieval tunnels, the WWI Fire Command Post, and immersive exhibitions highlighting life during siege and conflict. The site offers panoramic views, interactive displays, and guided tours that showcase its unmatched legacy in British defense.
