Description

Alnwick Castle, often called the Windsor of the North. Located in Northumberland, this fortress has been home to the Percy family, Dukes of Northumberland, for over 700 years and continues to thrive as both a private residence and a major visitor attraction.

Alnwick’s medieval origins date back to the Norman Conquest, but much of what visitors see today reflects extensive 14th-century fortifications, along with 19th-century restoration by architect Anthony Salvin. Its imposing walls, battlements, and towers give an authentic sense of medieval defence, while the interiors showcase Renaissance splendour.

The State Rooms are lavishly decorated with Italian Renaissance art, exquisite tapestries, and masterpieces by Canaletto, Titian, and Turner. Historical enthusiasts will appreciate the arms and armour collections, as well as exhibits on the Percy family’s influence in English history.

Alnwick is also renowned as a film and TV location, standing in for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films and featuring in Downton Abbey and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Visitors can join film location tours or even try broomstick training sessions in the courtyard, a popular family activity.

For children, the Knight’s Quest area offers dressing-up, medieval games, and interactive exhibits, while workshops support school trips and family learning. Outdoors, the castle links to the famous Alnwick Garden, with its cascading fountains, Poison Garden, and cherry orchard.

Facilities include cafés, a gift shop, accessible routes, and regular guided tours. Events such as falconry, medieval re-enactments, and seasonal festivals ensure variety year-round.
