Tintagel Castle

Tintagel Castle, dramatically perched on the north Cornish cliffs, is steeped in legend and military heritage. While often associated with King Arthur, its historical significance lies in its strategic coastal defence.

From the 5th to 7th centuries, the site functioned as a fortified elite settlement overseeing key maritime routes.

In the 13th century, Richard, Earl of Cornwall, built the present castle to project royal authority and control the rugged coastline.

Although Tintagel was never the site of major battles, its clifftop location offered natural defences and critical surveillance over the sea.

Today, Tintagel Castle invites visitors to explore ruins that blend myth and history. Highlights include the Arthurian exhibition, medieval stonework, and the famous footbridge connecting the island and mainland. The site offers expansive views, historical interpretation, and a powerful sense of Cornwall’s defensive legacy.
