Description

Nestled at Bruntingthorpe Airfield in Leicestershire, the Lightning Preservation Group (LPG) is a dedicated team of aviation enthusiasts preserving the legacy of the iconic English Electric Lightning—Britain’s Cold War supersonic interceptor. The group maintains two fully functional Lightnings, housed in the original RAF Wattisham Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) shed, offering a rare glimpse into the UK’s air defence history.

Visitors can witness dramatic engine runs during special events like the “Twilight Reheat,” where the aircraft’s afterburners light up the dusk sky. The site also features a collection of Cold War artefacts, aviation memorabilia, and a well-stocked online shop with exclusive Lightning-themed merchandise. While regular public access is limited, the group hosts open days and offers talks by former RAF personnel.

Facilities include on-site parking and access to viewing areas during events. For aviation buffs and Cold War history fans alike, LPG offers an electrifying experience—pun absolutely intended.
