Description
Perched atop Castle Hill overlooking the River Forth, Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most significant fortresses. Its landmark late medieval Royal Palace, Great Hall and Chapel Royal showcase Renaissance grandeur, while the restored King’s Old Building reveals 16th-century royal apartments. The Honours of Scotland (crown, sword and sceptre) and the famed carved Stirling Heads bring the past vividly to life. The refurbished Royal Palace – childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots – is also a must see.
Its strategic position guarded the “Gateway to the Highlands,” playing a decisive role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and later Jacobite conflicts. The first recorded use of fireworks in Scotland marked the baptism of Prince Henry here in 1594.
Facilities include a café and shop, accessible visitor centre with induction-loop assistance, audio guides, guided tours, free Wi-Fi, accessible toilets and parking, plus the landscaped Queen Anne Gardens.
