Skipton Castle

Features
Description
Skipton Castle, located in North Yorkshire, is one of the most complete and best-preserved medieval castles in England. Built in the late 11th century by Robert de Romille and later expanded by the Clifford family, Skipton has remained a striking fortress for over 900 years.
The castle played a crucial role during the English Civil War, when it became a Royalist stronghold and withstood a long siege before surrendering in 1645. Remarkably, the structure remained intact, unlike many other castles slighted during this period.
Visitors today can explore the impressive gatehouse, banqueting hall, kitchen, bedchambers, privy, and the atmospheric dungeon. The Conduit Court provides a glimpse of the castle’s domestic arrangements and includes a centuries-old yew tree planted by Lady Anne Clifford in 1659.
Exhibitions highlight the Clifford family’s heritage, medieval warfare, and the castle’s Civil War story. Facilities include a tearoom, gift shop, and guided tours, with educational resources for schools and family groups. Events such as re-enactments and craft fairs bring history to life.
