Mach Loop (West View Point)

Description

The Mach Loop is a series of steep-sided valleys in mid-Wales, running between Dolgellau and Machynlleth, used by the RAF and allied air forces for low-level flight training. Aircraft routinely whip through the loop as low as 250 feet (76 m), navigating tight turns against a backdrop of rugged terrain.

Aviation enthusiasts flock to the Loop for its unbeatable vantage points atop surrounding hills. The combination of close-up views, unpredictable sortie schedules and a rotating cast of military jets, transport planes and helicopters—from Typhoons and F-15s to A400s and Hercules—makes every visit unique. Photographers prize the Loop’s natural amphitheatre for capturing dramatic profiles, vapour trails and under-belly shots at eye level.

Cad West in the Mach Loop delivers an ideal topside or level perspective on low-flying aircraft.Sometimes pilots bank into Corris Corner, giving you a bonus second pass. Parking is ample, and the steady uphill walk up the hillside leads you to your perfect viewing spot.
