Description

Grangemouth Spitfire Memorial sits at Abbotsinch Road in Grangemouth, commemorating the 71 trainee pilots who lost their lives at RAF Grangemouth in tragic accidents at the training base during WWII. Unveiled in May 2013 by the Grangemouth Spitfire Memorial Trust, the focal point is a full-size replica Spitfire Mk I (serial X4859), mounted in flight above a distorted RAF roundel.

The replica Mark I Supermarine Spitfire is modelled on a real plane flown by a Polish sergeant called Eugeniusz Lukomski. He died in the aircraft aged 23, in an accident not far from the airfield.

There’s free, round-the-clock public access, on-street parking, a series of seating benches and information panels, plus the popular Rumbling Tum snack van nearby.

Special exhibits highlight the life-size Spitfire Mk I replica, a black-marble monument listing the 71 pilots’ names, a series of interpretive information boards set into a giant RAF roundel plinth, and the surrounding memorial garden landscaping that incorporates original airfield artefacts and poetry excerpts.
