Description
Located in Charlwood, Surrey, just minutes from Gatwick Airport, the Gatwick Aviation Museum showcases Britain’s golden age of aviation—from post‑WWII to Cold War jets. Visitors can climb into the full-size Robinson R22 helicopter, the Islander cockpit, and the Canberra nose section, plus enjoy a Typhoon flight simulator ride (extra cost), and photo opportunities dressing in pilot uniforms.
The Gatwick Airport exhibition features airline memorabilia, uniforms, models, and history panels tracing the airport’s evolution. A viewing area offers plane-spotting of live Gatwick runway operations.
The on-site Galley Coffee Shop serves drinks, snacks, sandwiches, ice cream, and baked treats. There’s a gift shop, picnic area, nature trail, and free parking. The museum is wheelchair-accessible, with disabled parking and toilets including a baby-changing facility.
Dedicated volunteer tour guides provide expert, engaging tours and occasionally open cockpits. Restoration work is ongoing and visible to visitors. Chartered school and group visits and educational programmes are also available.
Noteworthy events include double-engine run days, featuring live engine starts of the English Electric Lightning and Avro Shackleton.
