Bodiam Castle

Bodiam Castle, built in 1385, is a quintessential medieval moated fortress in East Sussex. Designed primarily for defence during the turbulent late 14th century, it played a strategic role protecting the region against potential French invasion during the Hundred Years’ War.

Its imposing curtain walls, battlements, and moat made it a formidable defensive stronghold. Although it saw little active battle, its architecture represents military design focused on security and defence.

Today, Bodiam Castle offers visitors impressive medieval exhibits, including reconstructed interiors, defensive structures, and scenic grounds, highlighting its role in England’s military history.
