Description
Perched high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the North Sea, Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland is a formidable fortress with a rich history in defence and warfare. Once the royal seat of the kings of Northumbria, the castle has stood as a strategic stronghold for over 1,400 years.
It played a crucial role in resisting Viking invasions and was besieged multiple times during the Wars of the Roses, notably in 1464 when it became the first castle in England to be destroyed by gunpowder artillery.
Today, visitors can explore the Armstrong and Aviation Artefacts Museum, featuring weaponry, armour, and early aircraft innovations. The Keep, dating from the Norman period, houses military displays, including medieval arms and siege equipment. The State Rooms exhibit fine art and artifacts from centuries of occupation.
