Description
Cardiff Castle sits at the heart of Wales’s capital, its motte-and-bailey keep rising above the Victorian Gothic revival mansion of William Burges. Beneath the fairytale towers lie 2,000 years of history: Roman fortress walls, a Norman shell keep, medieval Curtain Wall and a lavish suite of 19th-century state rooms (Arab Room, Chaucer Room, Banqueting Hall) adorned with murals, stained glass and gilding.
This strategic site first secured Roman control of the Silures, later guarding against Owain Glyndŵr’s 1404 uprising. In World War II, its tunnels sheltered up to 1,800 civilians during the Cardiff Blitz.
Facilities include guided tours and audio guides, café and shop, accessible lifts and toilets, induction-loop assistance, family trails, event spaces, free Wi-Fi and on-site parking.
