Description
Carlisle Castle has served as a defensive bastion for over 900 years, guarding the Anglo-Scottish border. Built by William II in 1092, it became a strategic garrison throughout centuries of conflict, including the Wars of Scottish Independence and repeated sieges. It was captured by Jacobite forces during the 1745 rising before being recaptured by government troops.
The castle also served as a prison—famously for Mary, Queen of Scots—and remained a military site into the 20th century.
Today, its keep, battlements, and museum reveal a deep legacy of defense, war, and resilience.
