Description

The Solway Aviation Museum, located at the Carlisle Lake District Airport in Crosby-on-Eden, Cumbria, celebrates over 60 years of volunteer-led aviation heritage conservation. Housed in spacious former RAF hangars, it traces regional wartime airfields, Cold War jet development and ballistic missile history through interactive galleries, displays and guided tours.

Facilities include free on-site parking, accessible toilets and ramps, a café and gift shop, picnic areas, mobility-scooter loans and volunteer experts on hand for cockpit tours of the Avro Vulcan.

Special exhibits spotlight Britain’s Blue Streak ICBM project at Spadeadam, an evocative Cold War gallery, and the museum’s Blackburn Beverley XB259 rescue campaign. Visitors can sit in the Vulcan XJ823 cockpit and explore the “Spiney Norman” Bedford bus from the TV series Bangers & Cash (subject to availability).
