Description

Tucked away in North Ayrshire, the Skelmorlie Secret Bunker is a fully restored Cold War-era Royal Observer Corps underground monitoring post—one of the few in the UK open to the public. Built in 1965 and operational until 1991, it was designed to track nuclear blasts and fallout in the event of an attack. Visitors descend a 15-foot steel ladder into the original bunker, where authentic equipment and instrumentation recreate the tense atmosphere of Cold War Britain.

Above ground, there’s a replica WWII aircraft observation post and a surface-level Cold War exhibit for those unable to access the underground space. Guided tours, led by former Corps members, offer a hands-on, immersive experience into Britain’s civil defence history. Facilities include accessible parking, toilets, and a small car park. Open weekends from April to September, admission is free—but pre-booking is essential due to limited space.
